Goal for the Day

Purpose:  This activity is used in a high school Study Skills class for students with learning disabilities (including students with ADHD).  During this class students are given the opportunity to work on assignments from other classes.  They often have a hard time organizing their time effectively.  This activity causes them to prioritize their assignments.  It also causes them to focus and hopefully motivate them to begin working.

Materials:  A point sheet. The grade for the Study Skills class is based on a daily point sheet.  They can earn 20 points daily: 5 for completing the class assignment, 5 for staying on task, 5 for maintaining an assignment book, 5 for accomplishing the daily goal.

Directions:

  1. Students maintain class folders that remain in the Study Skills class.  A point sheet is part of the folder.
  2. At the beginning of each class students are expected to write down the goal for the day on the point sheet.
  3. Prior to the end of the class the student and teacher evaluate if the goal for the day has been met.  Points are awarded accordingly.

Outcome:  Most students have been able to organize their class time and complete what is the most urgent assignment or the assignment that requires assistance/clarification.  This process also helps them to realize what they have left to do for homework and how much time they may have to allot for assignment completion.
